Man arrested with samurai sword allowed to return home

A man arrested after wandering down the Adelaide CBD waving a samurai sword just after midnight has been bailed and will be allowed to return home.

The man was spotted at 12.30am today, allegedly threatening the public and motorists as he waved a sword in the air.

The 25-year-old allegedly walked the length of Rundle Street with the weapon, yelling at members of the public.

CCTV showed him at one point appearing to point the sword at a taxi windshield.

Witness Marc claimed the man had actually approached him.

"He called out, he swore at us … pulled the samurai sword out of the sheath, and he was running towards us," he said.

Marc and his group fled, but no sooner had they crossed the road than the police arrived.

"You could hear police yelling out, 'put it down, put it down'," Marc said.

The man eventually dropped the sword, before an officer moved in and handcuffed him on the ground.

"I was shaking like a leaf," Marc said.

Commissioner Grant Stevens praised the officer's actions.

"There was no harm to the police or any other member of the public," he said.

"It was a good result and good work by that individual police officer."

The man was charged with a string of offences, including aggravated assault.

He was granted bail today to return to his remote Far North community.

It was decided some conditions, including a curfew, would not be imposed, because the accused did not speak English and would not understand them.
