Man behind devastating Melbourne apartment blast has charges against him dropped

A man who blew up his Melbourne apartment, injuring several police and firefighters, has had all charges against him dropped.

On January 4 this year, Leon Firth locked himself inside a bedroom of his Middle Park home, turned on a gas bottle and posted a message on facebook, alerting friends to his plans to commit suicide.

When emergency services stormed the apartment to save him, the gas ignited and engulfed the room in a fireball.

In court today, the prosecution argued Mr Firth should face criminal charges because he would have been able to foresee putting others in danger when they came to his aid.

However, his barrister successfully argued the only person his client intended to put in danger was himself.

While handing down her findings, Magistrate Jelena Popovic broke down in tears saying "I can't begin to tell you how much comfort it is, knowing there are people who act selflessly and valiantly to save the lives of others in the community."

Those burnt in the blast have years of treatment ahead of them.
