The RSPCA has taken custody of a dog that was filmed being violently kicked by its owner on the Gold Coast.

In video posted to Facebook, the man can be seen struggling to put a lead on the grey Staffordshire bull terrier in the back of a vehicle, which was parked near Currumbin yesterday afternoon.

After moving the dog onto the ground, the man forcefully kicks it before repeatedly tugging at the animal’s lead.

The woman beside the man does not appear to react to his behaviour, with her expression unchanged as she handles another dog during the incident.

The RSPCA tonight told 9NEWS that they confronted the owner this morning, taking his Staffordshire into their care.

They said the dog appears healthy, but charges could still be laid.

The larger dog filmed in the incident was not taken into custody.

“At this stage I would urge any witnesses to get in touch,” Alison Clarke from the RSPCA said.

The disturbing footage garnered a largely negative response on social media, with many Facebook users condemning the man’s actions.

"If I had a partner that treated his or our dog like that, I'd lose it, and he would lose his dog!" one said.

"Absolutely disgusting, that poor dog," another added.
