A man and his son heading on a burger run turned into a near-death series of accidents in Sydney's west this afternoon.

A 47-year-old man was driving with his 14-year-old son to the McDonald's drive-through in Mt Druitt when he suffered a medical episode.

Instead of making it to the drive-through, the car smashed through a fence, hurtled across a major road, into a nearby Red Rooster carpark on Luxford Street, and smashed into some scaffolding.

The scaffolding collapsed, entrapping the car.

The driver had to be cut free from the car and was taken to hospital by helicopter, in a stable condition.

His son suffered minor injuries in the form of cuts and bruises.
