A 40-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after a father was allegedly hit by a car and then beaten with a brick in western Sydney, leaving him fighting for life.

Emergency services were called to Freya Crescent in Shalvey just after 2pm yesterday, and found an unconscious 54-year-old man at the scene.

Police were told the man had been run over by a blue Kia four-wheel drive, before being set upon with a broken brick.

A neighbour, Linda Vakatau, told 9NEWS the victim had been laying bricks in his front garden at the time of the alleged attack.

“The guy walked out, hopped out from his ute, grabbed a brick and bashed him,” she said.

The 54-year-old man was taken to Westmead Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

The 40-year-old man was arrested at the scene, and has since been charged and refused bail.

He will appear in Parramatta Bail Court today.
