Man punched at Sydney backpackers

A man has suffered a fractured eye socket in an assault at an inner Sydney backpackers' hostel.

Police say a 32-year-old man and two women were in the reception area of the hostel on Darlinghurst Road in Potts Point at about 3.30am (AEDT) on Sunday when another man made offensive remarks towards the women.

When both men walked to another area of the hostel to discuss the issue the 32-year-old was punched in the face several times.

The assailant fled before police arrived.

The injured man was taken to St Vincent's Hospital with a fractured eye socket and partial loss of sight in his left eye.
