Man pleads with Geelong neighbour for help after being viciously bashed

A man suffering serious head and upper body injuries after being set upon by thieves managed to escape to his neighbour’s house.

It’s believed three or four people broke into the 31-year-old man’s home on Onley Drive in Thomson just before 1am today, barging into his bedroom and bashing him with "a machete or a pole", police said.

They took his 2002 black Holden Statesman with registration V4449 and an unregistered motorbike.

The man managed to get himself to his next-door neighbour’s home, who then called him an ambulance.

"There are a lot of unknowns as we haven't spoken to the victim as he had to go straight to hospital... It's quite vicious and obviously the victim has quite significant injuries. We as police are concerned about these incidents in our community," Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Gary Wilson said.

A metal pole found at the scene was removed, but police said they are still unsure if it is the weapon used.

The man was taken to Geelong Hospital to undergo surgery. He is in a serious condition.
