A man has partially amputated his hand with an angle grinder while trimming a tree in Sydney's north-west.

The 66-year-old was working in Stanhope Gardens about 8.30am today when the accident happened.

A CareFlight helicopter landed in nearby Edgewood Park to assist NSW Ambulance paramedics on the scene.
