Man missing off houseboat on the Murray

A search is underway for a man who fell overboard from a houseboat on the Murray River on the NSW/Victoria border.

Police say the 49-year-old Victorian man fell off the boat moored near Moama about 12.30am (AEDT) on Thursday.

His friends went to his aid but were unable to locate him.

A search of the water and riverbanks by NSW and Victorian police and other emergency service personnel failed to find the man.

The search was to resume on Thursday morning with the assistance of Victorian Police divers.
