Police divers have found a body in the search for a 21-year-old man who went missing while swimming in a water-filled disused quarry  in Ipswich, west of Brisbane.

A man’s body was found about 11.15am in Aqua Lake, a former open-cut mine in Collingwood Park.

Police were told the man and his friend were trying to swim across the lake about 5pm yesterday, when he became tired and disappeared below the surface.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Aqua Lake is a disused quarry with many submerged hazards and is as deep as 40 metres in some areas.

Earlier today, Acting Inspector Brett Wendt police had advised quarry water was "very cold" and likely to make swimmers cramp up.

“It’s a very hazardous location, it’s an ex-mine site and there’s submerged items and other debris in there,” he said.

A 16-year-old boy drowned in the lake in January.
