Man killed, two others critical after Melbourne highway collision

A man has been killed and three people hospitalised in a shocking crash in Melbourne's southeast.

A Ford Falcon station wagon and Mitsubishi Magna sedan are believed to have collided on the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne North at about 12.15pm.

The front passenger in the Falcon, a 69-year-old man, died at the scene.

The driver of the same vehicle, a 65-year-old man, was airlifted to Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

An 82-year-old man, the driver of the Magna, was flown to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.

He is believed to have sustained neck injuries.

The passenger in the Magna, a woman in her 80s, was taken to Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition with chest injuries.

Northbound lanes on the South Gippsland Highway remain closed just north of Thompsons Road.

Police are investigating the crash and urging any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
