Witnesses saw the man get being tackled to the ground in the Hyde Park Hotel car park, The West Australian reports.

Nearby resident Ashley Wilson said the man started to convulse when he was restrained.

"They were holding him down for about five minutes, then all of a sudden he started shaking," he said.

"Then they started giving him CPR, and police arrived and resuscitated him too."

The man was taken to Royal Perth in a critical condition, but died this morning.

Major Crime and Forensics Officers will prepare a report for the coroner.
