A man saw his car hit by a freight train after he drove through a fence and fell 10m onto a Blue Mountains railway line.

The train was travelling west along the Blue Mountains line when it collided with the car at Blaxland last night, police said.

The driver, believed to be in his 20s, was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"The railway line is currently closed in both directions while the car is moved," police said in a statement.

Replacement buses are being organised.

Police and railway officers are investigating.
