UPDATE: Teen describes being dragged by van after Sydney sunbaking accident

An 18-year-old man has survived being run over by a tradesman's van while sunbaking near a Sydney beach.

Miles Davies is recovering in St Vincent's Hospital but has no life threatening or permanent injuries.

He has described how he was sunbaking on a grassy area on Arden Street, Coogee when he heard a loud noise before being run over by the van and dragged for a few metres.

"My head hit the under half of the car and it kind of ripped it a little and then dragged me along a few metres," he told 9NEWS.

"To all of a sudden realise you've got a car on top of you and had blood down my face, I was kind of thinking 'what's happening?'."

Mr Davies was left with a nasty gash to his head and injuries to his upper body but no spinal injuries.

A photo tweeted from the accident scene showed a blue van parked near a crowd of people apparently huddled over the victim.

A number of other people were reportedly sunbaking in the area at the time.

Mr Davies' grandfather has called for signage in the area to warn people and motorists to look out for each other.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman confirmed a male teen had been taken to St Vincent's Hospital after being struck by a vehicle at about 11.45am.

Police are at the scene and have spoken to the 44-year-old driver of the van.
