A woman has been charged with murder after a man was allegedly stabbed to death at a boarding house in Williamstown, south-west of Melbourne’s CBD.

Police were called to the building on Nelson Place about 9.50am and allegedly found resident Danny O’Brien with multiple stab wounds on the floor of his bedroom.

The 37-year-old was treated by paramedics but died shortly after.

A woman, allegedly known to Mr O’Brien, later presented herself to a nearby police station.

She has since been charged with one count of murder and is expected to face an out of sessions court hearing shortly, police said.

Homicide Squad detectives have recovered a knife from the crime scene.

Another resident at the boarding house, owned by Yarra Community Housing, told 9NEWS he believed security at the building “needed to be improved”.

“I've made many complaints about people that go into my place…and they take my sugar and coffee and stuff like that,” Stuart Denning said.
