A 53-year-old Melbourne man will face court today charged with murder, accused of allegedly stabbing his housemate to death with an ice-pick following a row over a debt.

Gary Sean O'Connor has been charged with one count of murder after a 47-year-old man was found with stab wounds at boarding house on Peter Street in Springvale yesterday.

The alleged victim was found lying in a pool of blood.

Another housemate, Jason Sharkey, said others rushed to assist the victim, but it was “to no avail”.

“My housemate buckled over with what looked like puncture wounds. Wherever he had been struck… had already done the damage because what we tried to assist him with was to no avail.”

Housemates at the boarding house said the men were heard arguing over a debt.

“This had been going on for quite some time, and eventually someone is going to fold. Unfortunately, it ended up this way,” Mr Sharkey said.

“[The victim] was a troubled guy, a lot of us are.”

The 53-year-old appeared in an out of sessions court hearing yesterday where he was remanded in custody.

He is expected to front the Melbourne Magistrates court today.
