Man 'fights off Great White' at Manly's Jump Rock

An unverified video claiming to show a man fighting off a Great White shark in Sydney Harbour has gained the attention of the world’s media.

The video, uploaded to a YouTube account under the name of Terry Tufferson, purports to show footage of the encounter at Manly's Jump Rock which was captured on a GoPro.

The video has already been published on websites including the NY Daily News and Epoch Times after it was uploaded yesterday.

In it, a young man is seen high-fiving a friend before jumping off a rock ledge into waters off Manly with a camera strapped to his head.

Immediately his friends alerts him to a large shark gliding just metres away, which somehow escaped their attention until the moment he was in the water.

After a few moments of apparent panic, the swimmer climbs onto some nearby rocks to safety

But users on social networking site Reddit think the shark video looks fishy.

Some have already questioned the video's authenticity, with many calling it an outright fake.

Comments on the YouTube video claim the shark "teleports" at the video's 59-second mark - disappearing and then reappearing in different parts of the shot.

ninemsn has attempted to contact YouTube user Terry Tufferson, who only has one video to his account - this one, but is yet to hear back.

A report from Taronga Zoo claims that over the last 222 years to date there have been no recorded Great White shark attacks on humans in Sydney Harbour.

Great White sightings in Sydney Harbour are also extremely rare, with the report saying there has only been one reliable recorded sighting of a Great White inside the entrance to the Harbour which occurred in 1927.
