A man pulled from the water at a Sydney beach is in stable condition in hospital after suffering what appeared to be a heart attack while swimming.

Emergency services were called to reports of an unconscious man in the water off Manly’s Shelly Beach just before 9am today.

The man, aged 65, was swimming with friends when he ran into trouble.

He was pulled from the water and CPR was performed by trained bystanders, one an off-duty lifeguard and another, a doctor.

He was then treated by paramedics on the beach, and airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital where is now listed in stable condition.

The unpatrolled beach was temporarily cleared while the helicopter landed to take him to hospital.
