Man 'drunk' at helm of Sydney Harbour water taxi

A man allegedly drunk at the helm of a water taxi has been caught by police after crashing the 10m boat into a wharf on Sydney Harbour.

Police have charged the Northern Territory man with navigating a commercial vessel under the influence of alcohol after he allegedly crashed the boat while attempting to berth it overnight.

The water taxi hit the wharf at the southern end of Woolloomooloo Bay a number of times, NT News reported.

Police were called by concerned onlookers and had to secure the vessel themselves.

The master of the vessel, a 42-year-old man, was breath-tested and returned a reading of 0.188.

He was charged and granted bail to appear in Balmain Local Court on February 5.
