A man has been shot and killed on a suburban street in Melbourne's north in the early hours of this morning.

Police said there were multiple shots fired in Coronet Avenue in Roxburgh Park about 12:35am where a 21-year-old man was later found dead at the scene.

There was a number of men in the street at the time of the shooting.

Just before 6am, a young man who was visibly distressed attempted to get through the crime scene tape.

He was stopped by police while calling out "my cousin, my cousin" before he ran back to his car.

One neighbour told 9NEWS he heard "a series of bangs" as the shooting played out.

"We couldn't see anything but there was a series of bangs just after midnight. I didn't think it was gunshots, who listens for gunshots at that time of night," Saad Lebdeh said.

"The street is pretty quiet and the area is good. We've never had any issues so it's quite disconcerting for that to occur across the street."

Homicide detectives remain on the scene gathering evidence and a large section of the street has been taped off while investigations continue.

Police are asking for anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have scene the men in the street before the shooting to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
