The 87-year-old, and his scooter, was trapped under the vehicle before being freed using a jack supplied by a nearby mechanics workshop.

He suffered critical injuries and was transported a short distance by ambulance to a waiting helicopter. He died about 6am today at John Hunter Hospital.

The 29-year-old Belmont driver of the van has not been charged, but will be formally interviewed in the coming days.
