A man has died after his car collided with a cement mixer in Melbourne's north this afternoon.

The driver of the truck is currently assisting police.

Police believe the truck was driving with traffic towards Kilmore, when the vehicle in front of the truck turned left into Kellys Lane.

As a result of the movement, police say the truck lost control and rolled, crushing a car travelling in the opposite direction, killing the driver.

Detective Sergeant Mark Amos said it was an absolute tragedy.

"A family out there has potentially lost a father and grandfather, brother and sibling," he said.

"It's a nightmare."
