Man dies after car slams into tree on the Gold Coast

A man has died after his car crashed and wrapped around a tree in Hope Island on the Gold Coast last night.

Police believe the car was likely speeding along The Parkway when it left the road and hit a tree in the centre of the median strip about 10pm.

"Preliminary inquiries have indicated that the vehicle had been driving at a very high rate immediately prior to the crash, and has left the road out of control and has struck a tree," Acting Senior Sergeant Brendan Wiblen said.

The 34-year-old Nerang man, who was the driver and only occupant of the vehicle, was trapped in the vehicle.

Fire crews and paramedics worked to save him, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.
