Up to three men have allegedly clubbed a 69-year-old man to death and left his wife with severe head injuries in a violent home invasion in Sydney's west.

A crime scene has been established at the semi-rural property on Elizabeth Drive in Badgerys Creek.

About 4am on Friday, police say a woman in her 60s called triple zero, saying intruders had broken into her home and beaten her and her husband.

Her husband was found dead in the home by emergency services.

Police say the woman suffered head injuries and a broken wrist and is at Liverpool Hospital, where police are speaking to her.

"There were a number of men, up to three ... they were armed with weapons, including clubs," Detective Inspector Hans Rupp told reporters on Friday morning.

"It was a brutal attack and clearly the man was very badly assaulted and the woman was also assaulted, but she's not in as a serious condition," he said.

Police say they do not have a motive for the attack.

"We're obtaining a statement from the woman in hospital as we speak," Det Insp Rupp said.

"We've canvassed the street and we're looking at CCTV footage from the surrounding service stations."

Forensic experts and the homicide squad have cordoned off part of the busy stretch of Elizabeth Drive in front of the house.

Neighbours have told media they are shocked by the attack.

"It's a quiet neighbourhood. It's really shocking," one young male resident told the ABC.

The man's best friend, Charlie, has spoken to media, saying he does not understand why anyone would want to hurt the couple.

"He was a hardworking and honest man.

"Death is the hardest thing ... and the worst is... he was my best friend," he said.
