The victim, who is known to police, was taken to St Vincent's Hospital with woulds to his arms and legs.

He is in a "serious but stable" condition and surgery may be required later today.

It is believed the attack occurred after a dispute between two men, possibly over money.

CCTV footage appears to show the suspected attacker fleeing after the stabbing.

Witnesses said there was a lot of blood at the scene.

"He was screaming that he was hurt, he was screaming that he was bleeding," witness Keiran Rowell told 9NEWS.

A knife was found close by in Harmer Street and taken for forensic examination.
