Man committed to stand trial over alleged ‘one punch’ murder

Michael Christie has pleaded for his son’s death not to be in vain as a man was today committed to stand trial for the 18-year-old’s murder.

Daniel Christie died in hospital in January, 11 days after allegedly being struck by a single punch to the head, in Kings Cross on New Year's Eve.

Shaun McNeil, a mixed martial arts expert, is charged with Daniel's murder and four other assaults that night.

A committal hearing today heard from three teenagers who cannot be identified.

Witness three, who admitted he was heavily affected by marijuana, said he offered drugs to the accused.

He said the accused then said “give me the ecstasy and caps. I’m an MMA fighter.”

He then described a fight between the man and three teenagers.

After hearing today’s evidence, Mr McNeil waived his right to a committal hearing.

He will stand trial in the Supreme Court next year.

Mr Christie believes Kings Cross has changed since the night Daniel died and has pushed for lockout laws to be enforced across the state.

“Don’t let this young man’s, my son’s death mean nothing, we’ve got to protect these changes in the law and the lockouts and if anything, keep them going and extend them even further I think,” he said.

The government so far has no plans to extend the laws.
