Man allegedly stole, crashed truck while intoxicated in Sydney’s CBD

Police have charged a man after a wild night out in Sydney’s CBD where he allegedly stole a construction truck and drove it into a shopfront while intoxicated.

Officers were called to George Street near Martin Place just after 2am this morning following reports that contractors working on the Martin Place light rail project had detained a man who had allegedly stolen a truck from their worksite.

When they arrived, workers told police the three-tonne truck was parked inside the worksite when an unknown man got in the vehicle and allegedly drove it through the site on George Street.

The man travelled a short distance in the truck before crashing through the front windows of a nearby café.

Workers on the site chased after the truck by foot, and physically removed the man and detained him until police arrived.

Officers arrested the 33-year-old man from Queenscliff and subjected him a roadside breath test which returned a positive reading.

After being taken to Sydney Hospital for blood tests, the man was taken to Day Street Police station where he was charged with driving recklessly, driving a motor vehicle during a disqualification period, taking and driving a vehicle without consent of the owner and low range PCA.

The man was refused bail and is due to appear at Central Local Court today.
