Gang leader's brother charged with breaching crime prevention order

The younger brother of notorious gang leader Bassam Hamzy has been charged with breaching a crime prevention order after a police raid in Sydney.

Ghassan Amoun, 35, was last December issued with a Serious Crime Prevention Order (SCPO) by the Supreme Court.

These orders impose prohibitions, restrictions and requirements on people in the name of protecting the public.

Heavily armed police raided a home in south-west Sydney just after 7am yesterday after identifying several suspected breaches of the order.

During a search of the home, police found a mobile phone they allege contained two encrypted messaging services.

Mr Amoun, also known as Ghasson Hamzy, was arrested and charged with one count of contravening a SCPO.

He was refused bail.

Police will allege he breached his SCPO by using usernames or passwords in contravention to the order and by having encrypted social media applications installed.

Inquiries are continuing.

Mr Amoun is the brother of Bassam Hamzy, the founder of the Brothers 4 Life gang who is serving a decades-long sentence in Goulburn Supermax for murder and drug offences.

Another Hamzy sibling, Mejid Hamzy, was shot dead in Condell Park in October last year.

The brothers' cousin Bilal Hamze was gunned down in June outside a Sydney CBD restaurant.
