A man has been charged with the attempted robbery of another man at gunpoint in Sydney's southwest.

About 6.45am on December 28, a 65-year-old man was loading items into a car in the driveway of his home in Cabramatta West when a man, armed with a handgun, demanded his wallet.

When 65-year-old refused, he was hit across the head a number of times with the firearm, resulting in a deep cut. The armed man fled empty-handed.

On Tuesday, police attempted to stop a vehicle in the Cabramatta area, and a pursuit ensued, ending with the arrest of a 28-year-old man.

Police allege that during a search of a unit in Cabramatta, they located a replica pistol that matches the description of the firearm used during the incident.

On Wednesday, the man was charged with numerous offences including assault with intent to rob while armed with a dangerous weapon, driving while disqualified and engaging in police pursuit.

The man was refused bail. He will appear at Parramatta Drug Court on Thursday.
