Man charged over foiled robbery of Sydney pharmacy

A man has been charged over a foiled armed robbery of a Sydney pharmacy, during which the store’s staff were captured on camera fighting the alleged robber off with walking sticks.

The 59-year-old man has been charged with numerous offences including assault with intent to commit an armed robbery with an offensive weapon.

He is due to face Parramatta Local Court today.

Just after 4.30pm on Tuesday, the man allegedly entered the pharmacy on Auburn Road in Birrong, armed with a sharp wooden weapon.

A female pharmacist was allegedly assaulted and thrown to the ground, before a customer attempted to disarm the offender.

Three staff members then grabbed walking sticks and began hitting him.

The man then allegedly punched a customer, before running away with another witness hot on his heels.

He was then allegedly seen getting into a black-coloured car near Birrong Boys High School and driving away.

“The staff are wonderful I'm so proud of them for what they do here, they really do try and protect all of us,”  pharmacist Alica Gabila told 9NEWS on Tuesday.

“(I’m) very proud of them they all pitched in tried to help out, because he had me to the ground and tried to scare him off.”
