The man who used his car to tow his skateboarding son along an innerwest Sydney road has been charged with several offences including dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.

The 12-year-old boy has been recovering in the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick since he smashed his head while "skitching" behind his dad's car three weeks ago.

He fractured his skull and had bleeding on the brain but has now been brought out of an induced coma. He has been released from intensive care and is in a stable condition.

Police say the father is due to appear in Newtown Local Court on April 22.

In early February, the man said he was shattered over the accident.

"I am just devastated," he said.
