A 32-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly assaulted a police officer during an arrest.

The man was stopped by the officer on McFarlane Street, Merrylands over a traffic matter about 2.30pm yesterday.

A struggle ensued, during which it is alleged the man struck the officer in the side of the head before fleeing the scene.

Police claim the man attempted to hide in a neighbouring shopping centre, only to be arrested a short time later behind the complex.

The man has been charged with resisting arrest and assault police. He is due to face court on March 22.

The officer involved in the arrest did not require medical treatment.
