During the attempted theft, police said the 41-year-old punched the owner of the car in the face.

A short time later, a white Jaguar 4WD was allegedly stolen from Moore Road in Freshwater and then hit a parked police car with two officers inside.

The car drove off and police followed, attempting to pull it over.

The 4WD stopped and then allegedly reversed into the police car, causing significant damage.

Two male officers were allegedly assaulted after they arrested the man at the scene.

The pair sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

The alleged offender has been charged with a number of offences including common assault and driving whilst disqualified and will appear in court tomorrow.
