A man has been tied up and bashed with a steel pole by intruders at a home in Melbourne's east.

Police say two men forced their way into the Endeavour Hills home on Saturday night after the victim answered a knock at the door about 9.15pm (AEDT).

The offenders allegedly inquired if the victim was selling his car.

Once inside, the men assaulted the victim with what is believed to be a steel pole, bound his hands and feet, and held a knife to his throat, police say.

The men demanded money and searched the property, locating a substantial amount of cash.

They were last seen running from the property.

The 56-year-old victim was taken to Dandenong Hospital.
