Man avoids jail time over underage nude selfie

A Queensland man has narrowly escaped jail time after his friend's 13-year-old sister sent him semi-nude selfies.

The unnamed 20-year-old Caboolture man began a relationship with the girl last year after a period of flirting on Facebook, Fairfax Radio reports.

The pair engaged in mutual fondling in July last year, and soon after the man sent the girl photos of his genitals and asked her to do the same.

The man ended up storing the shots on a USB stick – which was later found by the girl's older brother.

After confronting the man, the brother called police who arrested and charged him.

In his sentencing today, Judge Brian Smith said there appeared to be no trauma or revulsion felt by the girl – adding that she had probably shown more emotional and intellectual maturity than the offender.

"That's the problem with young people these days, not understanding that other people will see these photos," Judge Smith said.

"It seems that this was consensual, but the law is to protect children from themselves."

A number of parole conditions have been imposed on the man.
