Man charged over gangland murder is Salim Mehajer's business partner

A man accused of the shooting murder of a Sydney underworld figure is the sole director of Salim Mehajer's new wedding business.

Ahmed Jaghbir was charged today with the murder of Kemel Barakat, who was shot multiple times while sleeping in his unit in March this year.

Mr Jaghbir was also charged with accessory before the fact and participating in a criminal group after his arrest at Guildford, in Sydney's west.

He later had a mention at Parramatta Local Court, where he did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

The 28-year-old was appointed sole director of Mr Mehajer's new wedding business, Mehajer Wedding and Event Planning, in September.

Mr Mehajer, the former deputy mayor of Auburn, is the sole shareholder of the business.

There is no suggestion Mr Mehajer had any connection to or knowledge of Mr Barakat's murder.

Mr Jaghbir's arrest came on the same day Mr Mehajer's home was searched in an unrelated police operation.

Mr Barakat, 29, died in his bed at Mortlake about 2.30am on March 10 from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police believe Mr Jaghbir was involved in the planning of the murder, including coordinating access to Mr Barakat's home unit.

The arrest comes days after police released security footage showing a group of men they believe gunned down the Sydney underworld figure in the hope it would help solve the murder.

The CCTV footage shows four men entering Mr Barakat's apartment building through a rear fire door, gaining entry to his apartment and then fleeing in a stolen Mercedes C63 wagon.

The Mercedes was later found burnt-out at Belmore, NSW Police say.

Mr Jaghbir has another mention scheduled for November 23 at Parramatta Local Court.

Further arrests are expected in relation to the murder, police say.
