Man arrested after alleged attempted carjacking with claw hammer in Sydney's east

A man has been arrested after he allegedly attempted to steal a car in Sydney’s east by threatening the driver with a hammer.

A 28-year-old man was leaving a carpark in Randwick about 4.30pm yesterday when he was approached by a 31-year-old man armed with a claw hammer.

The armed man allegedly opened the driver-side door and told the man to get out of the car.

As the driver attempted to get out of the vehicle, it rolled forward and struck another car.

The offender fled the scene on foot before he was apprehended by police as he ran out of the grounds of a nearby university.

He was allegedly carrying methyl amphetamine and property suspected of being stolen.

He was charged with possessing a prohibited drug, aggravated take and drive motor vehicle while armed, goods in custody and an outstanding warrant.

He will appear in Waverley Local Court later today.
