Teenage girl allegedly spat at, verbally abused on Melbourne train

Police are searching for a man who allegedly spat at a teenage girl on a Melbourne train last month.

The 14-year-old girl and her friend boarded the train at Newport Station in the city's south-west on May 19 just before 7.30am.

An unknown man then got on the train at Footscray Station and allegedly verbally abused the girls and spat at one of them.

Police are searching for a man they believe can assist with their investigation into an alleged spitting.  Victoria Police

"After standing at the door and staring at the girls, he approached the pair, verbally abused them and then spat at the victim," police said in a statement.

"The teenager and her friend quickly moved carriages to avoid any further confrontation."

The man is described as 180cm tall and unshaven with short brown hair. He was wearing a fluorescent green jumper at the time.

Police have released images of a man they believe may be able to assist police with their enquiries.
