Man misses birth of son after allegedly assaulting paramedic during partner's labour

 A NSW Hunter Valley man has spent the night of the birth of his son in jail after he allegedly assaulted paramedics while his partner was in labour.

Wade Still allegedly became aggressive towards two paramedics last night after he was told he could not accompany his pregnant partner, Teagan, in the ambulance to hospital.

The 22-year-old allegedly assaulted one of the paramedics, threatened both and then kicked the ambulance as it drove away.

“I just heard the guy screaming and smashing on everything,” neighbor Lucy McCosker told 9NEWS.

Mr Still was arrested by police 15 minutes later after a short struggle, and was allegedly found in possession of a knife and a tomahawk.

The accused’s father, Rodney, said he was “really upset” with his son.

“I didn't miss any of my kids births, I watched them all,” the elder Mr Still said.

Mr Still has since been charged with obstructing an ambulance officer, maliciously damaging an ambulance, assaulting police, resisting arrest and carrying a knife in public.

He remains in John Hunter Hospital in police custody, and will face Newcastle Local Court tomorrow morning.

Health Service Union (HSU) New South Wales secretary Gerrard Hayes earlier said he was "relieved" the incident was not more serious.

"Thank goodness there were two paramedics at the scene rather than just one - as is often the case," he said in a statement.

"This incident reinforces the need for paramedics to work in pairs and the need for more paramedics to be employed."
