Man assaulted during armed home invasion in Sydney's west

A resident in western Sydney has been terrorised by a group of men who broke into his home armed with guns.

Police were told a group of six armed men broke into a home on Horseley Drive in Smithfield at 10.20pm yesterday.

A 50-year-old man inside the home was assaulted and sustained minor injuries.

The man's daughter and two children were inside the home at the time, however, they were not injured.

"We believe that between them three firearms were in possession, we're very thankful on this occasion that the children weren't physically harmed," NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden said.

Police said the grandfather was the target, but they don't know why.

The men fled the scene in two cars.

The resident was taken to Liverpool Hospital.
