Malcolm Turnbull describes removal as prime minister as 'form of madness' during visit to New York

Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has again described the leadership showdown and his political execution as "a form of madness", admitting he'd been peppered with questions in New York about his downfall.

"They're the same questions Australians have asked," Mr Turnbull said.

"The answers are difficult to provide.

"I think the best description is the one that I gave at the time, and others gave.

"That whole episode was a form of madness."

Mr Turnbull was reluctant to buy into the issue, or domestic politics, but says he'll speak out on issues of importance.

"I'm retired from politics," he said.

"I'm not involved in partisan politics any longer.

"From time to time I will express my views as any citizen does on matters of public importance.

"I'm not engaged in partisan political contests.

"I wish all those who are there the very best, and wish them all the best of luck as they continue to advance Australia's interests."

Mr Turnbull was at an event at the United Nations, as he continues his holiday in the Big Apple with wife, Lucy.
