Turnbull rules out quota, denies Liberals sexist

Malcolm Turnbull denies the Liberal Party is sexist, and ruled out a quota to get more women into Federal Parliament.

The prime minister said pre-selections were decided by the party membership, and the Liberals were a "grassroots" organisation.

"I don't think a quota system can work in a grassroots political system," Mr Turnbull said.

"Everyone calls for democracy in politics. You can't have it both ways."

His comments follow the dumping of Assistant Minister Jane Prentice, in favour of a young male candidate in the safe Brisbane seat of Ryan.

Mr Turnbull said he was disappointed Ms Prentice had lot endorsement.

"She's a friend of mine. She's a very good assistant minister.

"I gave her a reference."

The prime minister pointed out 370 branch members voted on Saturday.

Ms Prentice has held the seat since 2010.

About 20 percent of Coalition MPs and senators are women.

Supporters of Jane Prentice had called for a quota system to be looked at.
