Raids across Sydney land haul of ice, cash and weapons

NSW police detectives allege they have shut down a major drug syndicate after carrying out simultaneous raids on 10 homes in Sydney's western suburbs.

The raids began when police arrested three men in a Wentworthville car park behind a public pool, next to a youth centre.

Those arrests paved the way for 10 simultaneous raids from Millers Point and Rozelle, out to Arncliffe, Guildford and Granville, and down to Canley Vale.

Poised with guns drawn, Riot Squad police stormed another car park in Sydney's west where a massive transaction of the drug ice worth $200,000 was allegedly set to take place.

Nearby at Merrylands, another alleged trafficker surrendered with the red light of a policeman's gunsight trained on his chest.

The joint operation between tactical police and the Middle Eastern organised crime squad uncovered wads of cash.

"I thought someone was breaking into our yard, and when I went out the back there was coppers going over the back fence," neighbour Jenny Ward said.

In total, $600,000 worth of the drug ice was seized, as well as heroin and cocaine, $100,000 in cash and a semi-automatic pistol and sawn-off shotgun.

Alleged kingpin Riad Taha, 30, is accused of recruiting drug runners as young as 17, and charged with shooting a man twice in the leg in March.

All but one of the six men charged were refused bail.
