Major delays on Sydney Trains network after fatality

Major delays on the Sydney Trains network continued well into last night after a death at Burwood in Sydney's inner west early yesterday afternoon.

The tracks had been cleared and the train line at Burwood reopened by 2pm, but hours later the delays continued.

A shortage of train drivers was blamed for the delays, according to an announcement by Sydney Trains.

The delays began early in the afternoon, when the track closure at Burwood was made worse by signalling issues at Strathfield, Petersham and Summer Hill.

Passengers on many lines have been told to allow for extra travel time.

The North Shore, Northern and Western, Inner West, South, Bankstown, Airport and Olympic Park train lines were all affected during this evening's peak hour.

Passengers on the Central Coast, Newcastle and Blue Mountains lines also experienced delays.

Passengers were warned that regular train services were running but stopping patterns may change at short notice.
