A Sydney hipster labelled "Australia's biggest wanker" for his style and smug comments has been defended by the editor of the magazine that exposed him to the verbal onslaught.

Sydney art director Jarryd Zankovic became the target of critics today after he appeared in an article titled "Industry Fashionista" published by trade magazine B&T.

A copy of the article was posted on the popular site Reddit where users dubbed the self-declared "hybrid of beauty therapist and tradie" the nation's "biggest wanker".

Following the criticism, B&T editor David Hovenden published an article in Zankovic's defence titled: "Not Australia's biggest wanker".

"When a young man who's at the top of his game is flamed by such a bunch of jealous bastards, it is truly an indictment on society," Hovenden wrote.

In the relentlessly mocked article, Zankovic described his signature look, which includes a blazer, "quirky" pocket square and drop crotch pants, which he adds are comfortable "for a dude who has a bit going on between his legs".

The Surry Hills art director adds that he has been waxing his eyebrows since the age of 12 and has his beard trimmed weekly.

One Reddit user said the 28-year-old "would go close to beating out Tony Abbot for the prize" of Australia's biggest wanker.

However, other Reddit users said there was nothing unusual about Zankovic's style and called for some commenters to stop the "bullying" and "hipster shaming".

Zankovi's employer, brand agency Play, said some of their employees remarks had been taken out of context.

Hovenden said he stood by the story, saying it "was done as a fun thing, written in jest".

"He's been trolled terribly on Reddit. He is part of our '30 under 30' and we should be celebrating the success he's achieved.

"He's clearly mucking around, and we were when we wrote the piece."
