Suspended Logan mayor Luke Smith has broken his silence to 9NEWS following his arrest for allegedly assaulting his wife, saying he would be happy to go back to work.

However, Mr Smith wasn't commenting about his dramatic arrest, in which he also allegedly smashed the windscreen of his wife’s car and obstructed a police officer.

At the time of the alleged assault, the mayor was already suspended on his full salary of more than $218,000 after being charged with official corruption and perjury.

He has denied those accusations but is yet to enter a plea on the assault charge.

When asked if he thought it was appropriate that he still receive his salary despite facing serious charges, Mr Smith said it wasn’t his call.

"Well that was a decision made by the local government minister, not me, I'm happy to go back to work," he said.

"I am the Mayor. Popularly elected."
