Low support for Labor, Liberal leaders

Voters have a dim view of the Labor and Liberal leaders.

The latest Essential poll shows 30 per cent of voters rate Malcolm Turnbull as the best leader of the Liberals, while 21 per cent "don't know" and 19 per cent rate "someone else" other than Tony Abbott, Julie Bishop, Christopher Pyne or Scott Morrison.

Mr Turnbull's rating is down nine points on the poll in March.

Of the four others, Ms Bishop is rated highest as preferred leader by 16 per cent of voters.

Bill Shorten is rated as the best person to lead Labor by 27 per cent of voters, compared with 30 per cent who "don't know" and 17 per cent for someone other than Anthony Albanese, Tanya Plibersek and Chris Bowen.

Mr Shorten's rating is up 12 points on the poll in March.

Ms Plibersek's 12-point rating is one point higher than Mr Albanese's.

The poll also gave Labor a 51-49 per cent two-party preferred lead over the coalition, just over two weeks since the election.

Only one-in-five voters said the new Senate voting system made voting easier, while 37 per cent said it was more difficult and 25 per cent said it made no difference.
