Former Senate clerk Harry Evans dies aged 68

Longtime clerk of the Senate Harry Evans has died.
Government Senate leader Eric Abetz said Mr Evans, 68, served as clerk from February 1988 to December 2009, a record 21 years.
Senator Abetz said it was very sad that illness prevented him enjoying the long retirement he had undoubtedly earned.
Mr Evans gave more than 40 years to the Australian Senate in various roles.
"He was a fearless defender of its powers and practices and will be remembered as one of the significant parliamentary officers of his generation, not only of Australia but of all the parliamentary democracies," Senator Abetz said in a statement.
Senator Abetz said Mr Evans was an expert without peer on the procedures and precedents of the Senate, and championed the rights of individual Senators.
"That will be his particular memorial," he said.
