Long-awaited plans for Brisbane's Queen's Wharf revealed

After months of secret talks Queenslanders can see the designs of massive casino resorts that two powerful consortiums are competing to build in the heart of Brisbane's CBD.

The state government says it's all about creating jobs, but there are fears it's a sign the Sunshine State has gone gambling mad.

One big chunk of prime CBD land and there are two grand plans to transform it, both replacing old government buildings with world-class facilities at Queen's Wharf.

In one corner, billionaire James Packer and Chinese-owned company Greenland with plans for a six-star casino resort that's bigger than Sydney's Barangaroo and better than Melbourne's Crown.

The plan includes restaurants, a water park, a new bridge to South Bank complete with a water fall.

"We think we've got a proven track record in our developments in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Macau, and we want the opportunity to prove that in Brisbane," Crown Resorts CEO Rowen Craigie said.

But their rivals have plans of their own with Echo Entertainment Group wanting to move their casino from Treasury to the centre of a new Abu Dhabi-style resort, surrounded by luscious gardens under the Riverside Expressway.

It's also connected to South Bank, via a shiny new bridge.

"Both of the proposals have certainly exceeded the government's expectations," Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said.

But not everyone's dazzled by the new design with some concerned Queensland will be gambling mad.

"People know gambling is out of control - Queensland is now leading that mania," Tim Costello from the Australian Churches Gambling Taskforce said.
