'Long-awaited opportunity': Infamous Bondi home up for sale

A Sydney home which has made headlines for mountains of rubbish piling up to its roofline will be forcibly auctioned on behalf of its hoarder owners.

The Boonara Ave, Bondi property has been known for 17 years for its stench and overflowing piles of rubbish, junk and furniture in and around the home.

Waverley Council has reportedly conducted 15 clean-ups of the house amid public health and safety concerns, costing local ratepayers more than $350,000.

The council was first granted permission to clean up the site in 2005.

The owners were ordered by the Land and Environment Court to pay costs each time, but the council has never received payment.

Owner Mary Bobolas purchased the house in 1973 for $15,000 and lives there with her daughters Elena and Liana.

The family had attempted to stop council workers from removing rubbish from the house numerous times with occasional success. A planned pre-Christmas clean-up was halted last year.

In an attempt to recuperate the costs of cleaning, the NSW Sheriff’s Office has listed the property for sale.

But the buyer may not have free access to occupy the property immediately after purchase.

The contract of sale states that the buyer should anticipate “continued occupation by the prior registered proprietor” after the settlement, Fairfax has reported.

Neighbour Terry Cudmore told News Limited the inside of the house is full of rubbish from the floor to the ceiling.

“I’ve been inside so I know what’s in there. It’s floor to ceiling, every room is full of what you see in the front yard,” he said.

The agent handling the sale, Ric Serrao of Raine & Horne Double Bay told 9NEWS there had already been more than 50 calls from prospective buyers.

An ad for the property on the real estate agency’s website describes the listing as a “long-awaited opportunity” and states the “freestanding dilapidated house” offers scope for building a "dream home".

The house is slated for auction on February 17.
